The Middle Ages are closer to us in themes and imagination than we think – look at Game of Thrones or The Lord of the Rings. In this course, we uncover the riches of medieval literature – from epics, elegies and beast fables to allegory, dream visions and chivalric romance. Starting with Caedmon’s Hymn - the earliest example of written English (7th C) – we will look at Beowulf, The Seafarer and other short poems in Old English; then progress to works in Middle English, such as Gawain and the Green Knight, and Piers Plowman, through to the fabliaux of Geoffrey Chaucer. To help experience the power and texture of the original texts, we will tackle the original Old and Middle English where possible. However, close reading and analysis will be carried out with modern translations.
