Victorian Britain became the workshop of the World and one of the greatest industrial, scientific and technological powers of the age but how did this happen ? In this course we shall examine how the adoption of steam power created the 'Factory System', created the world's first modern railway network and changed the world forever. We shall also look at the new developments in technology and how they changed every day life, and created the Victorian middle classes and modern cities. We will discover how Britain's global empire was supported by its industrial dominance; how Victorian industry impacted upon local people in the dominions as well as how Britain was also reliant on other countries for its success. During the course we shall examine how the workers at all levels experienced Victorian work and how it impacted on their lives, health and leisure. We will finally examine how industrial developments impacted up Victorian medicine and science.
