France was aflame with revolutionary fervour in the 1790s and beyond, culminating in Napoleon’s eventual coronation as emperor. This course highlights the confident role that music played in reshaping French cultural life during this time of bloody, political upheaval, and will examine the far-reaching repercussions of revolutionary ideals on a generation of composers, from Beethoven to Berlioz.
